The week was wonderful. We finally had the opportunity to see the finished yard. We also installed a putting green which was done by Southwest Greens. This was my husband’s deal to finish off the backyard. It actually looks incredible with the pool. They were here on Thursday and it took five guys the entire day to install it. They were very accommodating. Dad had them move a spot light and plant a cactus. After everything was said and done it was almost $9K with all of the changes. The sales guy stayed most of the day and Omar was the supervisor and very nice. The guys worked constantly with a couple of breaks and they were really working hard. The green rolls extremely slow but it’s a process they come back in a couple of weeks to roll it again. It’s not perfect but we are hopeful. Playing Estrella the greens are really fast. We are still working out a few details with California Pools. We have a link with the waterfall feature and they sent someone out today to do a repair. They have been accommodating with the details making sure to send people out to take care of things. The pool guy was here on Wednesday we are paying a monthly fee to have someone come in and keep up the pool. I will keep you informed about this guy still unsure it’s too soon to form an opinion. I’ve been unable to play golf this week with a neck issue but I did ride and took pictures of the course. The excitement of today was the bobcat that ventured into a sand trap. Wow it’s in the middle of the day and they are walking around on the course. The course is beautiful and it’s so quite in this area. My husband played with a very nice couple who recently moved from Michigan today. The first nine my husband was a happy man then he had a meltdown the last nine. I however threatened to walk home if he did not act right. The only smart response was your not taking the beer. Anyway, I’ve posted tons of photo’s that I hope will display the backyard and more to come.

Completed Project!!!!
We are visiting in a couple of weeks then I can take some professional pictures and upload them. Stephen just sent these over so I thought I would post them. We will do a walkthrough of the final project when we visit. From the photo’s it appears that everything looks beautiful. Can’t wait to use the pool it’s 72 and sunny in Phoenix today and 55 and rainy in Portland, OR. Although I’ve not done the final walk through my experience with California Pools was very professional and responsive. As I mentioned in the beginning of this project I’m a hard to please client and my husband is all about the details. I would strongly recommend this company to anyone but particularly to out of state individuals because they do not need to be micromanaged. I noticed in our community Estrella Mountain that most of the homes do not have a backyard. Most of our neighbors are waiting for the market to turn around. I hope my blog has been helpful and I would be happy to answer any of your comments or questions.

California Pools
Today they are filling up the pool and wrapping up. My father-in-law says the backyard looks beautiful. We are in Oregon so we’ve been unable to see with our own eyes. He has been monitoring the entire process and calling my husband about 10 times a day to give updates. If my father-in-law says it looks beautiful then it does. He has been on poor Steve and the workers daily. I guess during the process his two little doggies Boggy and Zammy escaped out the side gate while Dad was on the phone. The construction guys came around to the front door ringing the door bell to get his attention. Then the other guys chased them down and brought them back home. Thank you guys both Jeff and I appreciated that those dogs are everything to him. As you know if you’ve been reading I sent my first email to Mike on 6/14/2011 and we went back and forth for months. I gathered all of the bids at the end of July and covered up the contracting companies and sent it to Mike to give me comparables and the difference. He sent me a detailed email explaining the difference between his bid and the others. He broke it down to every detail and his emails were very lengthy. We finally decided to go with California Pools in October. The first day of construction was 10/10/2011 and today we are filling the pool wrapping up the project December 23, 2011. We pretty much up graded everything. My husband purchased a Lynx BBQ, burner, sink, fans, outdoor heater, and outdoor shower in Oregon. When we moved dad out we placed everything on the truck. My husband found a Lynx BBQ from a contractor in Oregon that was brand new. I guess it was installed improperly and caught on fire burning only the wires to the BBQ. He picked it up for $800 and worked with Lynx to replace the wiring harness which was nothing. He installed that one here and cleaned up the older one that we have replacing all of the guts and polishing the stainless steel. My husband was a purchasing manager for 17 years and is not only thrifty but handy. He knows how to pick up his electronics and high end appliances and picked up an outdoor hanging heater for a ridiculous amount to hang on the patio. So none of that stuff was included in the bid just the installation. Kami was our scheduler and Steve was our construction superintendent. My husband Jeff pretty much took over the project once I selected the company that I felt was most competent to do the backyard. We picked up all of the materials and he kept upgrading during the process. We did have a few bumps in the road. The hard dig was the first one but that was out of every ones control. Then we came out over Thanksgiving for the week and noticed that the materials were on the sidewalk and partially on our neighbor’s yard which they did not mind. The backyard was a complete construction site and a mess with mud and stuff. During that week no work was done and we thought that we would be having a meeting. They were painting the fences in Estrella and the contractors had stuff leaning up on the fencing which my husband had to move. He was concerned that all of the soda cups and mud in the pool would clog the drains. We both sent an email to Mike and Kami upon returning to Oregon. I was none to happy. Mike had no idea about the trash in the pool and I chalk the entire situation up to poor communication between all of us about the construction schedule. We should of scheduled a meeting if that was expected. Mike had a cleaning crew out to clean up. We decided to add lighting in the front as well as the ones we purchased for the back. The ones that were shown to my husband by the lighting guy from California Pools was gorgeous copper not a spot on them. They came out and installed the lighting and they had spots on them oxidizing. Dad said that only two lights were acceptable. My husband received several calls from Dad angry about the lighting. When Jeff went to the lighting guy he said polish them. Now that is unacceptable. We purchased new lights and we understand that copper does oxidize however not right out of the box. Jeff sent the email to Mike and he said he would take care of it that this must be a manufacturing defect. This was a very reasonable response and customer service. Mike sent people out to polish the lighting and all was great because Dad was completely happy. Overall I want to say that California Pools was wonderful. I have not seen the finished product I go out in two weeks at that point I will take tons of pictures. I would recommend California Pools to anyone who is considering installing a backyard. They did not do the putting green we will have that installed when we visit in January. Estrella has lots of vacation homes and if you live out of state you need a good company that you can count on. I hope this helps.

Purchasing a Home in Estrella Mountain Goodyear, AZ
I’m using my new blog to help people who are looking to purchase a home in Arizona and put in a backyard. What to say about the world of foreclosures, banks, and finally realtors? We started looking for a foreclosure in November of 2010 and finally after making an offer on at least 20 to 30 homes we closed in June 2011. The first recommendation I have to an out of state home buyer is to find a good realtor. We started out with a guy which I’m not going to mention his name in the blog that was just too slow. He was very nice however did not match the demands of my personality. We flew down to learn about the area and where we wanted a home. We had a very detailed list of requirements down to the way the home faced the evening sun. Basically we are very high maintenance and living in Oregon trying to find a home in Arizona was our worst nightmare. I regretfully had to fire the first realtor because he had absolutely no urgency. We finally found someone that was amazing. We outlined all of our requirements and she plugged it into her realtor software which my husband spent most of his time watching and bothering her. My husband looked at homes day and night emailing her bugging her to go take pictures. Literally my husband was her full time job and I’m surprised that she did not fire us. Her name is Rachele Funk If you live out of state like we do you need someone who is diligent, creative, and owns a camera. Rachele advised us and made us feel very comfortable about purchasing a $350K home without seeing the inside. Rachele took tons of photo’s of homes that we wanted to look at. She moved quickly in preparing offers and talking to the agents or banks. Given the funny business with the banks and backup offers it was a nightmare. I could not understand how we would go in at a higher price and then lose the home to someone else at a lower offer. Then the games with the banks waiting until the last minute and then taking the homes to auction. I’m not sure but I think the reason for auction is so the government will make up the difference in the loss from the original price to help the banks out. The problems that we noticed are the homes sit vacant for months at a time and then the pigeons move in. I will say that the housing market in Arizona is just a mess with the foreclosure and shady things going on. The banks are just a mess as well. I contribute my husband’s due diligence on the computer all day everyday and Rachele’s quick response to us finally getting a home. We wanted a TW Lewis home and even my husband started becoming creative by finding the rental homes and having Rachele approach the builders. I guess TW Lewis has several rentals because they did not want to take a loss on the homes so they rented them. That did not work because they still wanted more money than we were willing to give. Apparently they did not get the memo about the foreclosure mess. We visited once and had decided that we wanted to be in Estrella Mountain on the golf course. After months and tons of offers we pretty much gave up on the golf course and started finding ourselves desperate to just find a home in Estrella Mountain. Finally my husband noticed early morning a home that just came back into the portal he called Rachele and she jumped on it with a full offer. She called Bank of American directly and told them we were prequalified and our first mortgage in Oregon is currently with Bank of American. She submitted our offer that morning with everything completed. We were in first place with a full offer package. We found out that they accepted our offer and had multiple back up offers. The other piece of good information I can give you is to have your financials organized and ready to go. We had everything in one file in an email format. Remember they need three years of taxes and your last three employment stubs. I hope this helps.
